Exhibition “Kaunas Modernism Interpreted”

Modernism through Design and Visual Arts, is a year-long project, commissioned by Kaunas 2022 to Laura Serra and Maxime Forest, co-founders of Kolektiv Cité Radieuse, based at the UNESCO-listed Le Corbusier Housing Unit in Marseille. Devoted to the relation of those disciplines to 20th century architecture, Kolektiv invited four international guests from the Czech Republic, Poland, and Ukraine, to share their inspiring practices around interpreting modernism with Lithuanian architects, designers, and artists. Selected through an open call, participants were encouraged to expand and challenge their own practices during a collective residency held at House of Iljinai family in Kaunas in October 2021.
Based on an iterative process initiated with a co-design workshop held during the residency, participants developed their own, genuine interpretations of Kaunas interwar and post-war modernism. From textile design, through graphic works, (video) installations and furniture, the exhibition launched on 21st of September 2022, reflects both the step-by-step process and the pluri-disciplinary standpoint adopted for the project. It argues that interpreting and preserving modernist heritage, and endorsing the complex, often contentious history that underpins it, require engaging with communities, to strengthen a sense of localness and belonging, while exploring contemporary issues such as sustainability or conflicting memories.
Exhibition open for visitors: September 21st – October 20th
On Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
On Saturdays 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Curator of the exhibition Laura Serra

Excursion: “How does the pearl of interwar modernism -– the house of A. Iljiniene – lives today?“
We invite you to see historic Kaunas from the inside, through the eyes of the restored pearl of interwar modernism – the house of A. Iljiniene – which we see every day in K. Donelaičio Street. You will have a unique insight into the life, interiors and culture of that time. You will see how the restored heritage object inspires today's "inhabitants" of the house to create and find new projects. The meticulously restored house, the lovingly restored interior spaces, the restored and refurbished furnishings, the tastefully selected furniture of the period allow the visitor to feel the spirit of the prewar period and to understand the innovative modernist style of that time. The house and its interior were like a fresh gust of architectural fashion that came from other European countries to the temporary capital Kaunas, illustrating the history of European modernism. Today, it shows us once again how rich Lithuanian culture is and encourages us to create for the future.
Come and see: See it. Hear it. Feel it.
