Exhibition “Lithuanian Design: From Temporary to Contemporary”

Various locations

An exhibition of design artefacts in the showcases of central Kaunas is actually the story of the development of Lithuanian design. Curated by Sonata Šulcė, the show features furniture, graphic design, lighting, textiles, and the most influential designers. The story of Lithuanian design is divided into several critical periods: the interwar period, the Soviet era and today, all of which will be presented in the exhibition.

Kosmos Theatre, a collective of young artists, will present an intriguing installation of old cars in different locations around the city. It’s a kind of imaginary and time machine, a provocative artistic installation that will raise questions related to the city’s history. It will also present Kosmos Theatre’s new project, a mobile app for artistic-historical itineraries called KOSMOS APP.

International exhibition “Modernism for the Future 360/365”

The collective show is one of the European Capital of Culture’s opening cycle highlights. It features more than 20 artists and architects from five countries.

“Modernism for the Future 360/365” addresses the fate of the heritage of modernism in contemporary European cities. It aims to reveal the value and appeal of this architectural style to the contemporary viewer, the citizen, the professional and the amateur. 

With this exhibition, Kaunas demonstrates its leadership in the field of modernist heritage. It definitively establishes itself as one of the world’s centres for the study, promotion and attraction of modernism. 

William Kentridge‘s Exhibition “What We Don’t Remember”

If you need one reason to visit Kaunas in 2022, this is it. The exhibition by contemporary art genius William Kentridge will put the city on the European cultural map for a long time. Visitors will see an 

The artist invites us to enter into a dialogue with ourselves. “What We Don’t Remember” is an exhibition that aims to connect the scattered fragments of historical events into meaningful mosaics, like a mirror that reflects those who look at it.   

Political, civic and social themes are hallmarks of Kentridge’s work. The artist brilliantly combines incisive content with a powerful aesthetic, shattering the viewer's preconceptions or stereotypical attitudes.  

13th Kaunas Biennial “Once Upon Another Time... gyveno jie jau kitaip”

The biennial exhibition features works by 23 international artists and groups of artists exploring myths and fairy tales, as well as personal and communal stories of survival and transformation. Visiting contemporary art objects in unusual places is a journey through Kaunas and the story of human survival expressed in novel ways. 

Exhibition “Magic Carpets Landed”

12 am–5 pm, Kaunas Picture Gallery, K. Donelaičio g. 16, Kaunas Railway Station, M. K. Čiurlionio g. 16

The international exhibition is one of the oldest projects of Kaunas 2022, developed across Europe over four years. Be sure to see it and find something that clicks, as the project tells unique yet recognisable stories of journeys between people, communities, artists and curators.

Theatrical tour of Kaunas Biennial

Exhibition by Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil (LU) 

11 am–4 pm, Gallery “Meno parkas”, Rotušės a. 27

The duo of Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil (LU) allows the imagination, feelings of instability and allogeneity to flourish in their works, even though the reality of their art is a controlled and defined contemporary world. In this exhibition, the artists explore the utopias that have shaped the 20th-century worldview, loaded with symbols that glorify industry, while critically examining the situation we find ourselves in. 

The exhibition is part of the Esch 2022 programme.

Exhibition “Arno Funk[tionalism]”

11 am–6 pm, A. and P. Galaunė House-Museum, Vydūno al. 2 

The exhibition is dedicated to one of the most exciting and mysterious architects, engineers and interior designers of the interwar period, Arnas Funkas (1898-1957). He implemented the principles of functionalism in residential and public architecture in Kaunas. The exhibition presents the architect’s work and the principles of architecture and interiors of buildings of that period, which highlighted and shaped the uniqueness of Kaunas architectural landscape. 

Yoko Ono’s installation “Ex It”

12 pm–10 pm, Bank of Lithuania, Maironio g. 25 

Finally, the art of Yoko Ono visits Kaunas, the birthplace of her friend George Maciunas.

Everyone recognises Yoko Ono as a non-conformist in the art world. The music producer, a prominent figure on the New York art scene and wife of John Lennon, was once at the origins of Fluxus, together with Maciunas.   

During the opening weekend of Kaunas 2022, Yoko Ono’s massive installation “Ex It” will launch in the historic palace of the Bank of Lithuania.

Light and Sound Mystery

4 pm–11 pm, the building and garden of Kaunas State Musical Theatre 

Kaunas State Musical Theatre has prepared a festive programme that will feature a collage of operas, operettas, and musicals, synthesised with light and colour installation on the theatre’s facade. The hour-long mystery will be broadcast intermittently.

Workshop “The Carpet of the Mythical Beast” 

12 pm–5 pm, Kauno kultūros centras, Mažoji salė, Vytauto pr. 79 

See how the mysterious meadow is born and grows during an open workshop. Here, using yarns donated by Kaunasians, a carpet – the resting place of the Mythical Beast of Kaunas – will be knitted, crocheted, knotted, sewn and woven on large tapestry looms. 

Experiential installation “First Stop: Little Paris”

5 pm–9 pm, bar “Mažasis Paryžius”, K. Donelaičio 42-1.

A sneak peek at a documentary theatre performance “Taxi” will occur in a bar founded in the first years of the restored independence, which was once a favourite of Kaunas taxi drivers. You will have the opportunity to meet the participants of the documentary performance and share your memories and experiences of taking a cab in Kaunas. 

Improvised Music Workshop 

2 pm–6 pm, Kauno menininkų namai, V. Putvinskio g. 56

The event will introduce improvised music, its methodology and aesthetic expression to people with a musical background, young musicians, performers and educators. 

Exhibition “Stories of the House”

11 am–4 pm, Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania in Kaunas, Vilniaus g. 33

It’s time to see the Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania with different eyes. The story of this palace dates back to when the building was the residence of the Governor of Kaunas; it was later visited by the German Kaiser. The palace has witnessed many dramas – ups, downs and wars – of Kaunas and the whole of Lithuania over nearly two hundred years. It is the crossroad of all our history, keeping its secrets in the shade of the garden.

Interactive art installation

12 pm–4 pm, Kaunas Vincas Kudirka Public Library Laisvės al. 57 

The creators of this interactive art installation invite you to look at language, sentences and the ordinary meanings of words from a new perspective. Here you will meet a robot poet who will create a unique work inspired by your facial features. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence algorithms will interpret classic literary texts from the library’s archives and put them into new variations. 

Educational workshop “Animation Laboratory of V. Starevičius”

10 am–11 am; 11:30 am–12:30 pm; 1 pm–2 pm, Kaunas State Puppet Theatre, Laisvės al. 87A. Register by calling 8 647 83137 

Together with Audrius Bartninkas, constructor-puppeteer of Kaunas State Puppet Theatre, we will invite the little film enthusiasts to get acquainted with the history of animation: from the most popular animated films currently shown on cinema screens and television to the origins of animation and the freeze-frame technique, pioneered by Vladislovas Starevičius, an artist who was once based in Kaunas. The workshops are for children aged 7-11. 

Exhibition of My(s)thical Creatures “The Brotherhood of the Beast of Kaunas”  

10 am–2 pm, K. Donelaičio g. 8.    

The Mythical Beast of Kaunas is not alone; it belongs to the subculture of mythical creatures. The highlight of this event is an exhibition of sculptures of my(s)tical creatures. that have answered the call of the Mythical Beast of Kaunas. At least five creatures will be presented, including Kaukas, Cerberis, Phoenix, Slibin and Basilisk. The creatures were created by artists Ala Volkova and Donatas Beniulis.  

Performance and installation “Commandant’s Bunker / to the Contemporary Fortress”

2 pm–6 pm, Perkūno al. 2A, follow the directions at Parodos St. and Vytautas park  

A mysterious place in the city centre will open its gates for visitors for the first time. The Commandant’s bunker will be the scene of an uprising – a transformation from a Tsarist fortress to a modern bastion of freedom. With bonfires and contemporary music, the bunker’s accesses will invite everyone to revolt and step into the Contemporary Capital together with the community of Kaunas Fortress. 

The Novi Sad Avant-Garde Exhibition 

11 am–5 pm, Kaunas Gallery, Vilniaus g. 2

The Serbian Avant-Garde exhibition presents the development of conceptual art in Novi Sad. Visitors will explore the works of artists and groups active in Novi Sad in the 1960s and 1970s and the echoes of their continuity today. 

The exhibition is part of the Novi Sad 2022 programme.
