The exhibition WE ARE ALSO WHAT WE ARE NOT by Regina Hübner

Meno Parkas Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition WE ARE ALSO WHAT WE ARE NOT by the artist Regina Hübner. The exhibition will open at the gallery (Rotušės a. 27, Kaunas) on July 17, Wednesday, at 6 PM.

Regina Hübner, an artist born in Villach, Austria, and based in Rome, and Villach, has been exhibiting her works since the 90s, blending experimental photography, film, video, and performance. Her unique, site-specific artworks interact with their environment and viewers, incorporating natural and artificial elements. Hübner's themes explore connections between life, relationships, and universal concepts. She has shown her works in more than 40 solo shows and participated in more than 80 group shows.

WE ARE ALSO WHAT WE ARE NOT is an examination of empathy, perception, duality intrinsic to human nature and subjective constructs shaped by our interactions.

Regina explores the transformative power of empathy—the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This connection is collated with the inherent dualities of creation and destruction, themes that permeate Hübner's work. The title, WE ARE ALSO WHAT WE ARE NOT, implies that our identities are formed not only by our intrinsic characteristics but also by our relationships and interactions with others and our surroundings.

An artist Skaidra Jančaitė will perform 21 Lithuanian folk songs during the opening. Every 20 minutes from 18:00 to 21:00, Jančaitė will sing a song, creating a living connection to the themes of the exhibition. The incorporation of Lithuanian ancient folk songs and sutartinės further compliments the exhibition, twisting personal and collective memory. Varying themes of life, death, and nature, underscore the continuity of human experiences across generations.

The exhibition at Meno Parkas Gallery is closely related to Hübner's previous works, "Dear Cell" (shown at Meno Parkas in 2022) and the monument created to honor Paul Watzlawick. Both works address themes of perception, communication, and reality. In the current exhibition, the human capability to feel empathy with what we are not (reflecting the self/not-self lense of "Dear Cell") is explored through the perception of reality, including Lithuanian songs as metaphors for personal and collective history.

The exhibition is part of gallery’s project “Ether. 2024”. Project is financed by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.

The exhibition in Meno Parkas will be open until August 11.

Gallery's working hours: II-V 11:00–18:30 ❖ VI–VII - 11:00–16:00 ❖ I - Closed
