The exhibition “Game” by Rimas Čiurlionis

Painter Rimas Čiurlionis is one of the most prominent and well-known Lithuanian artists in America. In this exhibition, he presents abstract compositions on paper, canvas, wood panel and sculptures created between 2017 and 2023.

When working on abstract compositions, the artist discovers his own principle, a kind of equation of his decision, like the relationship of sounds in music. Here, such a relationship is created through shapes, colours and lines. The artist says he avoids giving his works titles, as it seems to him artificial and fake. In his opinion, it is most appropriate to call an abstract work a "composition", because the viewer becomes free to interpret it and feel its impact.

"Creation becomes clearer to me when I am not talking about personal complexes, when the clarity of forms and colours finds its place on a piece of paper or a canvas, in sculpture – when each form or colour is individual and forms a unity, a wholeness, or becomes a sign of fullness, which reminds me, for the time I have been given, that creativity, like human beings, has two origins: the sadness of the temporary and the radiance of the eternal. It is an experience that reminds us of our metaphysical existence," – says the artist.

Rimas Čiurlionis was born in Kaunas. After graduating from the Stepas Žukas Higher School of Art, he has been working for eleven years in the field of fresco restoration at Pažaislis Monastery. In 1992, he moved to the USA and settled in Chicago. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the USA, and his work is regularly exhibited at major art fairs such as SOFA, Expo Chicago and Art Hamptons. Čiurlionis' works have entered public and private collections, including Loyola University Medical Centre in Maywood, Harris Bank in Chicago, the Adamkus Presidential Library in Kaunas, and the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius. His work adorns a number of private interiors in Lithuania and abroad.
