Dream Belly-up (Dog or Fish?) | Workshop with Afrang Nordlöf Malekian
On 9 November at 3 pm, we invite you to the workshop "The Rise of Tehrangeles Divas" with artist Afrang Nordlöf Malekian. "The Rise of Tehrangeles Divas" is a workshop that takes inspiration from the performance Keeping up with the Iranians by artist Afrang Nordlöf Malekian, which reconstructs a mehmooni: a social gathering at someone’s home, e.g., dinner, dance party, celebration, etc.
Tehrangeles refers to the Iranian music scene that relocated to Los Angeles after Khomeini banned music in the aftermath of the 1979 Iranian revolution. This fugitive culture of dance, music, and joy has long been discredited by intellectuals, Marxists, and Westerners as apolitical and superficial art.
Using this historical context (along with any that you bring), as well as collected cassettes, music videos, and interviews with Tehrangeles figures, we will develop our own characters within the Tehrangeles world through writing and improv. Background in performing arts is not necessary! Anyone daring to dream is welcome to this once-in-a-lifetime workshop at Kaunas Artists’ House. Leave as a full-blown Tehrangeles pop sensation, ready to bring your dreams into reality.
The event is free of charge and will be held in English. Participants do not need performing arts experience.
