Belly-Up Dream (Dog or Fish?) | Liudmila
Until 20 November the fifth exhibition of the programme "Belly-up Dream (Dog or Fish?)" is open at Kaunas Artists' House, featuring works by the art duo Liudmila.
Chances are that the works in the exhibition are telling a fairy tale—about spells, desires, deception, or traps. Or perhaps about unexpected discoveries, like bingo or eureka moments. Or even about miracles, if fate favors. The works seem dramatic, maybe even a little hysterical. Neither they nor the hosts, who have vacated this space, if not disappeared without a trace, should be trusted. We know little about them, and what we do know is almost a lie. But chances are that they left their wings behind. I’ve heard that, in their time, they might have given wings? The truth about this exhibition will probably never be known. Still, mirrors—they always tell the truth, don't they? Do you believe in what you see in them?
In the exhibition, you encounter Fortuna. She observes, anxious about the strange relationship between our desires and a reality that defies our control. The image of "everything is possible" is presented to us as an archetype that has cast its spell over us, offering no escape. The anxiety stirred by whispers of "fame and fortune" keeps us constantly on the run.
Here lies a field of dynamic tension between the predictable and the unpredictable. Whatever doesn’t work, make sense, or feel comfortable is always accompanied by fantasies of the good life and other phenomena that feed optimism. The question of fantasy is fundamentally about how it helps people remain attached to worlds and situations, finding ways to thrive within them. In this exhibition, the intensity of our toxic, complex, incompatible, or simply messy relationship with the world is revealed.
