Remis Scerbauskas. "Territory Kaunas / Street Photography"

Territory Kaunas / Street Photography Each city of the world has it‘s own face and it could be difficult to describe it in words, because it is of more than just architecture and dwellers, it consists of action, emotion, state. If you close your eyes and imagine the face of the Kaunas, how would it look like? Before your eyes might start playing rhythm and geometry of Modernistic architecture, old paving tile pattern in Laisvės avenue, green spaces near confluence or Musical Theater, showcases of the shops, arch-shaped passages, stairs, station, factories, Nemunas, it all intervened with unfamiliar faces, motion of the city, someone going, sitting, watching, smoking, talking, working, dreaming, playing, smiling.. even – scratching one‘s nose. Life in full bloom! For over than ten years of photo shooting in Kaunas streets Remis Ščerbauskas captured various moments of city life, where architectural details interlaced with cultural or social phenomenon. Although it is not easy to attribute R. Ščerbauskas works to street photography, because of their complexity, variety of meanings and compositions. It could be said that his artworks expand the boundaries of the genre. Street photography usually is a documentary of public life, image of the social construct of the city, conveyed with the help of photography medium. Each photography by Remis Ščerbauskas is a peculiar story in itself – a captured moment of the city theater. Even if it was not directed and actors were not warned in advance. In fact, sometimes they don‘t have a clue, that they got into the frame. Most importantly the captured moment will never be repeated again. The memory of the city is imprinted in the works of photographer – expressive types of people, their gazes and emotions, architectural details, revealing peculiarities of the city, it’s daily events. Photography of R. Ščerbauskas becomes valuable not only in it’s creative aspect but also as a documentary or social research. Not everyone is capable of doing street photography. It takes a lot of endurance and perseverance, well-disciplined eye – not only to see, but to put in composition image of many surrounding variables. R. Ščerbauskas is constructing his images with a glimpse of gentle irony, using play of the details and strict rhythm. Viewers can enjoy their esthetics, separate elements, city architecture, expressive characters, but more attentive eye will see a captured moment of the city in action, emotion and state – with the help of photographer’s eye – the real face of Kaunas.
